Wie Jörg Immendorffs Arbeit lässt sich auch Georg Herolds 1989 entstandene Serie Private Datenbank als zeitgeschichtlicher Kommentar zur deutsch-deutschen Wiedervereinigung lesen. Mit Witz und Ironie thematisiert sie neben Banal-Doppelsinnigem vor allem Erosion gesellschaftlicher Ordnungssysteme. So spielt Bin mal eben Zigaretten holen auf die scheinbar plötzliche, tatsächlich oft lang vorbereitete Flucht in den Westen an. Vor dem Hintergrund seiner Biografie – gescheiterter Fluchtversuch aus der DDR, späterer Freikauf durch die BRD – lässt der Serientitel auch Fragen zur informationellen Selbstbestimmung in der Wendezeit aufkommen: Wer sammelt Daten über wen? Was ist privat, was öffentlich? Fragen, die in Zeiten von KI und Social Media aktueller kaum sein könnten.
Auch Herold steuerte der 1996 für die C&L Deutsche Revision AG produzierte Grafik-Sonderedition der Städelschule eine Arbeit bei. Das Motiv bezieht sich auf den Grundriss der Ausstellungshalle Portikus, die zur Städelschule gehört und der der Verkaufserlös der Sonderedition zufloss.

Like Jörg Immendorff's work, Georg Herold's 1989 series Private Datenbank (Private database) can also be read as a contemporary commentary on German reunification. With wit and irony, it addresses not only banal double meanings but above all the erosion of social order systems. For example, Bin mal eben Zigaretten holen (I'm just going out to get some cigarettes) alludes to the seemingly sudden, but in fact often long-planned, escape to the West. Against the backdrop of his biography – a failed attempt to escape from the GDR, later ransomed by the FRG – the series title also raises questions about informational self-determination during the period of transition: Who collects data about whom? What is private, what is public? Questions that could hardly be more relevant in the age of AI and social media.
Herold also contributed a work to the special edition of the Städelschule graphic produced in 1996 for C&L Deutsche Revision AG. The motif refers to the floor plan of the Portikus exhibition hall, which belongs to the Städelschule and to which the proceeds from the sale of the special edition went.
